Thank you! Your article really analyses Snape's evaluation of Electra Heart well. I was especially shocked (and frankly horrified) by Snape calling out a "weird preoccupation" with the idea of vomiting in several of MARINA's songs. I mean, the whole point is to create the gritty, anorexic atmosphere, the kind of environment many teens feel trapped in. Maybe one of the reasons is that she wrote this, as you said, with internalised misogyny. And on a more trivial note, the spoken word in "Homewrecker" isn't, as Snape said, "excruciatingly bad"- it perfectly suits the song, giving it depth, adding meaning to the memorable chorus by providing examples and creating a vivid and relatable story in the listeners mind. As a teen girl, this album is amazing (not my favourite album by MARINA, but definitely one of the best albums I've ever heard by any singer). It empowers women; it sympathises with teens. And honestly, I am so glad that you were able to recognise that as well, and share your views with others through this article. (I know I'm a little late to this article, reading it in 2025, but ever since I first heard this album two years ago, it's struck a chord within me. Now as a 14 year old, I can relate to it even more, and realise its importance. So I just read this article and felt compelled to thank you for putting my thoughts on this album so well, and sharing these ideas with others)
<3 I just went to see the pitchfork review because for me (Tumblr teenager at that time), the album was a legend, a classic. And I was shocked - wow, 5.9? The same goes with early Lana Del Rey - these musicians were icons at that time, for us, for some reason. I am shocked when I see their reviews and feel like: "oh was I just 'silly teenager' the whole time?". No. You got the point and thank you VERY much for this article.
beautiful piece. that album was and still continues to be everything to me.
